WAKY banned The Beatles!
Louisville's Courier-Journal on August 4, 1966, reported "Station WAKY at Louisville is playing a short record every hour explaining that 10 seconds of silent prayer are being presented in place of the current Beatles record."
WAKY described its format in 1966 as "Top 40 music 24 hours, news at :25 and :55."
In April 1966, WAKY DJ Tim Tyler was working with local concert promoter Martin Cohn in trying to lure The Beatles to Louisville for a concert, according to that city's Courier-Journal. "The kids are driving us insane," Cohn told the newspaper on April 7. "Some of them offered us $20 for a front-row seat. I had no idea the Beatles were still that big."
